AI Hyperscaler Nscale Lands $155M for Global Expansion

London-based AI hyperscaler Nscale has secured a remarkable $155 million in one of the UK’s largest Series A funding rounds of the year. Emerging from stealth in May 2024, the company has quickly positioned itself as a leader in the AI infrastructure space, responding to the growing demand for computational power to support AI innovations.

Nscale specialises in designing advanced data centre sites capable of hosting large supercluster deployments tailored for global hyperscalers and large language model (LLM) platforms. Leveraging cutting-edge closed-loop direct liquid cooling technology, these data centres aim to enhance performance and energy efficiency while minimising environmental impact—an increasingly critical factor in today’s sustainability-driven market.

The substantial funding round, led by Sandton Capital Partners with participation from Kestrel 0x1, Blue Sky Capital Managers Ltd, and Florence Capital, will fuel Nscale’s ambitious plans to expand its pipeline of greenfield data centres across Europe and North America. Currently at 300MW, the company aims to scale this capacity to 1.3GW, with 120MW set for development in 2025 alone. This aggressive expansion reflects the industry’s demand for rapid, scalable, and environmentally responsible solutions to meet the needs of AI-driven enterprises.

Nscale is also preparing to launch a public cloud service in early 2025. This offering will provide developers with flexible access to purpose-built solutions for AI training and inference, showcasing the company’s commitment to supporting innovation in the AI ecosystem. These developments highlight Nscale’s potential to disrupt the market by delivering bespoke GPU clusters faster than competitors, with better unit economics.

The company’s leadership is another key driver of its success. CEO Joshua Payne, previously the founder and chairman of renewable energy-focused Arkon Energy, brings a strong track record of combining technological innovation with sustainable practices. Payne emphasised that the funding marks a critical step in Nscale’s mission to provide cost-effective, tailored AI infrastructure on a global scale.

Kestrel’s general partner Philippe Sachs, who also serves as Nscale’s chairman, lauded the company’s vertically integrated approach, while Rael Nurick, co-founder of Sandton Capital Partners, expressed confidence in the firm’s ability to power enterprise AI at scale. The backing of these investors not only provides capital but also underscores the credibility of Nscale’s vision in a competitive market.

Nscale’s strategic focus on sustainability is a notable differentiator. By harnessing renewable energy sources and employing innovative cooling methods, the company addresses critical environmental concerns associated with the energy-intensive AI industry. This focus not only aligns with global regulatory trends but also appeals to an investment community increasingly prioritising environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations.

The broader impact of Nscale’s advancements cannot be overstated. As AI adoption accelerates, the infrastructure supporting it becomes vital. Nscale’s ability to provide scalable and sustainable solutions positions it as a cornerstone in the ecosystem of AI innovation. With a clear trajectory of growth and a robust foundation of industry partnerships, the company offers a compelling opportunity for stakeholders looking to ride the wave of AI-driven transformation.

This funding round signals a significant milestone in the AI infrastructure sector, one that reflects both the immense potential and the evolving responsibilities of technology providers in a rapidly changing world.
