Formula E and DHL have transported approximately 257 tons of freight from Berlin to Shanghai using DHL’s GoGreen Plus service, which employs Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This initiative marks a significant step in their ongoing effort to promote sustainable motorsport and logistics.
SAF, derived from waste sources like used cooking oil and food waste, offers an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional kerosene aviation fuel. DHL’s insetting approach via the Book & Claim system ensures that emissions are reduced directly at the source and then credited to DHL and its shippers.
The freight transportation covered over 6,000 miles, utilising three planes. This operation forms part of a decade-long partnership between Formula E and DHL, spanning 127 races, aimed at revolutionising sustainability in motorsport. Besides SAF, other green initiatives include the use of sustainable biofuels in road and ocean freight and strategic regional clustering of races to minimise logistical emissions.
Julia Palle, VP of Sustainability at Formula E, emphasised the ongoing innovation and sustainability efforts that reinforce their status as the world’s most sustainable sport, having built on more than a decade of collaboration and success between Formula E and DHL.
Manuela Gianni, Head of Motorsports Italy at DHL Global Forwarding, highlighted the shared commitment to sustainability and the collaborative efforts to support Formula E’s mission while reducing environmental impact. Together, these initiatives are driving positive change and inspiring a greener future in sports and logistics.
